I recently spent an incredible week in Valencia 🇪🇸 at the Longevity State Conference and the Longevity Biotech Fellowship retreat.#Aging is one of humanity's most universal challenges. It affects every one of us and everyone we care about, placing ever-increasing demands on our health systems. Age is the primary risk factor for the lifestyle diseases currently overwhelming our health services, and additional structural and economic challenges await as aging outpaces replacement rates. The "longevity" sector is vast, encompassing everything from wellness and health optimisation to radical life extension technology. Each component has its place, but to truly make a significant impact, we must focus on the science of augmenting the aging process itself, rather than merely ameliorating its side effects.Consider this: eliminating all cancer would only increase life expectancy by a couple of years. In that context, how much effect can cold plunges or small molecule supplementation really have on our overall trajectory? We need better options.Recent years have seen significant investments in organisations like Altos Labs and Hevolution Foundation, totalling billions. Yet, these sums are paltry compared to the hundreds of billions consumers spend on the beauty industry each year, attempting to mitigate aging's effects. The funds are there; it’s just a matter of allocation. They say, "pay peanuts, get monkeys." Right now, we are investing peanuts and expecting miracles.Let's shift the conversation and focus our efforts where they truly matter.#Longevity #HealthSpan #LifeExpectancy #Biotech #AgingScience #HealthOptimization #InvestInScience

“It’s not a failure if things don’t go right. It’s a failure - and you can call me on it - if we don’t learn from it”I attended a refreshingly candid session with Ashley Bloomfield KNZM CMInstD this evening at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge. Sir Ashley was New Zealand’s Director General of Health during the pandemic. As well as reflections on Covid and other public health issues, he provided useful insights on #leadership in times of crisis and decision-making in uncertainty. Also great to run into Michael Chen-Xu - New Zealand Medical Students' Association (NZMSA) alumni turn up everywhere!

This International Women’s Day, I’m excited to announce I’ve joined the Board of Directors of the #ngo Women in Global Health as Treasurer. This international movement has more than 100,000 supporters in over 100 countries and aims to increase representation of women in global health leadership to better reflect that 70% of the health workforce are women, as well as promoting gender equity in health planning and health coverage that is gender responsive. As some seek to wind back to clock on hard fought gains in women’s health, I am proud to #takeastand alongside women - not in spite of being a man, but because I’m one. Humanity wins when we all move forwards.#iwd2024
